REVVIM LAUNCHES PAGE2 NEAR DUPLICATE CONTENT DETECTION CAPABILITY

Santa Clara, CA. October 29, 2013 – Revvim.com is setting another new standard in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technology with its ability to detect near-duplicate pages. Page2 (pronounced “page squared”) flags pairs of pages containing near-duplicate content and provides filtering based on the percent of content that is duplicated between them. The technology uses a natural language processing analysis technique known as shingling that then employs the Jaccard coefficient to measure similarities in two sets of pages, comparing every page to every other page on a website, and reporting the percentage of duplicative content.

Duplicate content is a key issue for many large websites because: it can confuse the search engines as to what page is the best page; deliver a less than desirable search result to the user; waste the allocated crawl budget resulting in a loss of pages in Google and Bing indices; and result in a loss of link authority.

Specifically a site with two similar pages is requiring that the search engine determine which of the two pages is, in fact, the best page. Because search engines use historic rank as a key factor in determining which page is the best page the user could well be served an older out-of-date page when a newer similar page would be the site’s preferred page. The enormous scope of the task of crawling and indexing the entire World Wide Web further compounds the issue. It takes significant computing resources to crawl the WWW, so when the search engines encounter a website with a lot of near duplicate content they may choose to use their resources somewhere else, like on indexing unique pages on a competitors’ sites.

Additionally, Google and Bing allocate a finite amount of resources to crawling a site, referred to as a “crawl budget”, and duplicate content wastes that budget on similar pages costing the site the ability to get other good pages indexed and showing in the search engines. Then consider the loss of link authority, each duplicate URL may have some links associated with it, but it is diluted over multiple pages and neither page receives the full value of the links to that content thereby reducing the authority of both pages.
